Surrogacy

PIVET Medical Centre offers Surrogacy, both Gestational and Traditional,

to heterosexual couples and single women deemed eligible to proceed with a Surrogacy Arrangement.

Approval must be obtained from the RTC (Reproductive Technology Council) prior to any ART (Assisted Reproductive Treatment) taking place.

Gestational Surrogacy is when the Arranging Parents provide the gametes (egg and sperm) to create an embryo which is then transferred to the Birth Mother.

Traditional Surrogacy is where the Birth Mother, as well as carrying the pregnancy, also provides the gamete (egg) that will be inseminated / fertilised by the sperm of the Arranging Father.

Couples considering entering into a Surrogacy arrangement must have an appropriate medical reason for pursuing Surrogacy. Examples such as an absent or structurally abnormal uterus that has resulted in cases of recurrent miscarriages or repeated IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) failure, if supported by appropriate medical documentation. Medical conditions such as severe renal disease, unstable diabetes, severe cardio-vascular diseases or respiratory diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis.

Some immunological disorders (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus) or dangerous haematological disorders may mean Surrogacy is appropriate. All such medical cases require supporting evidence from a Specialist medical referral.

PIVET will have to consider whether underlying diseases of the arranged parents are compatible with reasonable longevity before progressing with Surrogacy as below.

Am I eligible to access Surrogacy?

The Arranged Parent(s) must fulfil eligibility criteria as currently defined in Section 23 of the HRT Act 1991 i.e. menopausal women and most menopausal women where menopause is not considered to be premature cannot be considered.

Am I eligible to be a Birth Mother (Surrogate Mother)

There are a few restrictions on who may be a Birth Mother under the Act.  If you are over 25 years of age and healthy (to carry a pregnancy) as assessed by a medical practitioner, then you may be suitable to be a Birth Mother.

The preference is also for the proposed Birth Mother to have had at least one child or to have completed her own family.

How do I find a Surrogate?

The Arranged Parent(s) will need to source their own Birth Mother. PIVET cannot facilitate this except to keep a Register of women who have expressed interest in acting as Birth Mothers. Advertising is permitted in Western Australia and in the past has proven quite successful for PIVET candidates.
